Nedbank appoints former MTN technology executive Nikos Angelopoulos as group CIO

With effect from 1 September, as the banking group continues to advance its technology and digital transformation agenda.
Angelopoulos joins Nedbank from MTN Group, where he served as group CIO since 2018. In that role, he led technology strategy, investment, delivery and governance across the telecommunications group's 16 operating markets, supporting a customer base of more than 300 million.
His appointment comes as financial institutions continue to increase investment in digital platforms, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud technologies and data capabilities to improve customer experience, strengthen operational efficiency and support long-term growth.
Angelopoulos brings more than 30 years of international technology leadership experience gained across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. Throughout his career, he has led large-scale technology modernisation programmes, with expertise spanning digital transformation, cloud computing, enterprise data management and AI.
Before joining MTN, he held senior leadership positions at telecommunications operator du, Vodafone and global consulting firm Accenture, where he was responsible for driving complex technology and business transformation initiatives.
At Nedbank, Angelopoulos will oversee the bank's technology strategy, with a focus on accelerating innovation, expanding the use of data and AI, and strengthening the digital capabilities that underpin the group's products, services and operations.
The appointment aligns with Nedbank's broader strategy of building a technology-enabled organisation capable of responding to changing customer expectations while improving resilience, operational performance and long-term competitiveness.
Angelopoulos holds an Executive MBA from the London Business School, where he was recognised on the Dean's List. He also earned an MSc in Digital Communications and Signal Processing from Imperial College London and a BSc in Physics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
